Meeting September 24, 2013
Minutes

Present:  Chairperson Barbara Swartz, Sam Fiori, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Lisa Lyons, Bev Moustakis, Barbara Sirois, Sandra Power, Judith Wolfe       Absent:  Marcia Lambert, Ellen Talkowsky   

Meeting was called to order at 7:37

1.  Minutes:  The minutes were approved as written

2.  Reminders and Announcements:  None were offered.

3.  Traffic Island Program:  Mums for Service Island, 2013 Program Wrap Up -  A motion was offered, seconded and approved which determined  that The Traffic Island Program will have two Agenda components: a). the Committee’s sponsored Active Duty Service Island project and b.).  The long running Traffic Island Project headed up by Sandra Power.

Active Duty Service Island:  The purchase of mums for the Island was discussed.  In was moved, seconded and approved that mums will be purchased up to the amount of $80.00.

Traffic Islands:  There are seven new Island sponsors- HMA, Bouchard Garage, Beacon Insurance, Gorilla Printing, BLC, SAFE, and AP Photography.  Taste of Asia and Butler Tree Landscape did not renew their sponsorships.  Four Islands will be maintained by two new volunteers: Patty Carter and Ilene Collings.  City watering problems and communication problems were raised and will be addressed.  The need for volunteers, potential sources for finding them and recognition of current volunteers were discussed.  The Traffic Island project will be discussed at the Strategic Planning Meeting.

4.  Lady of Salem:  2013 Program Wrap Up -  It was reported that 21people signed for Tours during the Sails and Trails event. Lady of Salem cards were left at the Visitor Center.   The “faceless” human sized Lady of Salem cutout was a big hit. Many visitors added their “faces” to the form for picture taking.  The Boys and Girls Club will sponsor a “Lady” in 2014.  They will be asked if they can provide winter storage for the “Ladies” when they are taken down in October.  A local business inquired about its creating and commercially marketing a facsimile copy of a “Lady.”   Business accounts, recognition of volunteers, the need for recruiting sponsors and obtaining grants were discussed.  The October meeting will be dedicated to the “Lady of Salem project.


5.   Pumpkin Decorating Contest: Volunteers for pumpkin receiving and judging -  Decorated pumpkins are to be delivered to the Common on Friday, October 18th   from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M and Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 to 2:00 P.M.     Judging will be at 11:00 A.M. on Sunday the 20th.  Committee volunteers will be needed to receive and handle the pumpkins.  All can show up on Sunday to participate in the selection of winners.  Pumpkin donations are being requested.   Chairperson Barbara and Ellen Talkowsky will deliver pumpkins to the “after school” programs.

6. New Business: Change of meeting start time – It was moved, seconded and approved that beginning in October, Committee meetings will begin at 7:00 P.M.

A Motion to adjourn was proposed and allowed.  The meeting adjourned at 8:50 P.M.
